The Anybus Configuration Manager included with the Communicator, is pre-configured for use with Modbus-RTU. It uses visual template wizards that guide you through the easy 6-step configuration.
Modbus RTU is an open, serial (RS-232/422/485) protocol derived from the Master/Slave architecture. It is the most used serial protocol used today, mostly due to its ease of use and reliability. Modbus RTU messages are a simple 16-bit CRC (Cyclic-Redundant Checksum). The simplicity of these messages is to ensure reliability.
The Anybus Communicator functions as a Modbus RTU Master towards your connected serial-based slave devices. Towards the Controlling PLC, the Communicator is a slave device on the upper network.
The scenario below shows two examples of how devices can be connected to a control network using serial Modbus RTU via RS-232 to one device and RS-485 to multiple devices. The Communicator is a Slave/Adapter on the Fieldbus/Ethernet network but a Modbus RTU Master to the attached slave devices.
